Writing Press Releases Was Part of My Job |

When I worked for a federal agency as a Public Affairs Specialist, one of my jobs consised of writing press releases (PRs) . These PRs were to be made short and sweet, to the point, covering all angels, and offering a positive flavor on the subject. Your headline and first paragraph should be telling a story. You always answer the questions who, what, where, when, and why in your press release.
You need to illustrate, stick to the facts, pick an angle and use active not passive voice. Beware of jargon and cultivate hype. Examples of press releases would be when I wrote about Environmental Education Grants. These grants were being announced at a late date which meant a shorter turn-around time, the amounts of funding available was lower than usual, and the requirements for application had changed. Putting that information out with a positive spin was difficult. However, I rose to the occasion, and the Press Release went out. We ended up with about 205 acceptable applications, and the Environmental Education Grants Program once more proved successful.
